TIL: Ancient Romans Used Concrete That Can Repair Itself

  Today I learned that some ancient Roman buildings have survived for nearly 2,000 years because the concrete they used can naturally seal small cracks over time. For decades, researchers believed volcanic ash was the secret behind Roman concrete’s incredible durability. More recent studies found that the Romans also mixed in chunks of quicklime. When tiny cracks formed and water entered, those lime fragments reacted and helped create new minerals that sealed the cracks before they could grow larger. This is one reason structures like the Pantheon and many Roman harbors have endured centuries of earthquakes, storms, and changing climates while some modern concrete begins to deteriorate after only a few decades. Scientists are now studying this ancient technique in hopes of developing stronger, longer-lasting, and more sustainable concrete for modern construction.   TIL that one man survived both atomic bombings during World War II. Tsutomu Yamaguchi was working in Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, when the first atomic bomb exploded. The blast left him with severe burns, ruptured eardrums, and temporary blindness. Despite his injuries, he managed to travel back to his hometown of Nagasaki. Just three days later, while explaining to his employer what had happened in Hiroshima, a second atomic bomb detonated over Nagasaki. Yamaguchi survived that explosion as well, making him one of the very few people known to have lived through both attacks. After the war, he dedicated much of his life to speaking about the devastating human cost of nuclear weapons. His story became a powerful reminder of resilience and the importance of pursuing peace.
