Axolotls Can Regrow Their Hearts, Brains, and Even Limbs

The axolotl is one of the world’s most extraordinary animals. Native to the lakes of Mexico, this unique amphibian has an ability that sounds like something from a superhero movie—it can regenerate entire body parts.


If an axolotl loses a leg, tail, or even part of its heart or brain, it can grow the missing tissue back. Even more impressive, the new body part functions just like the original, with little to no scarring.


Scientists have spent decades studying this incredible creature in hopes of unlocking the secrets of regeneration. Understanding how axolotls repair damaged organs could one day lead to breakthroughs in treating serious injuries and diseases in humans.


Another unusual feature of the axolotl is that it spends its entire life underwater. Unlike most amphibians, which transform into land-dwelling adults, axolotls remain in their juvenile form throughout their lives while still reaching adulthood and reproducing.


Their feathery external gills allow them to breathe underwater, giving them their distinctive appearance. Axolotls also have an amazing sense of smell, helping them locate worms, insects, and small fish in murky water.


Sadly, despite being famous around the world, axolotls are critically endangered in the wild. Pollution, habitat loss, and invasive fish species have caused their natural population to decline dramatically. Conservation efforts are now focused on protecting the remaining wild axolotls and restoring their habitat.
