How Chameleons Really Change Color (It’s Not Just for Camouflage)
Chameleons are famous for their incredible ability to change color, but contrary to popular belief, they don’t do it just to blend into their surroundings.
While camouflage can play a role, scientists have discovered that chameleons change color mainly to communicate and control their body temperature.
When a chameleon is excited, angry, frightened, or trying to attract a mate, tiny specialized cells in its skin called iridophores rearrange microscopic crystals. This changes how light is reflected, allowing the animal to display brilliant shades of green, blue, yellow, orange, and even red.
A relaxed chameleon often shows calm, natural colors, while a stressed or threatened one may become darker. During mating season, males display brighter colors to impress females and warn rival males to stay away.
Chameleons have another amazing adaptation—their eyes can move independently of each other. This means they can look in two different directions at the same time, scanning for predators while searching for food.
When they spot an insect, both eyes focus on the target before the chameleon launches its long, sticky tongue. The tongue can extend up to twice the length of its body and strikes in a fraction of a second, making it one of the fastest feeding mechanisms in the animal kingdom.
Today, there are over 200 species of chameleons, most of which are found in Madagascar and parts of Africa. Unfortunately, many species face threats from habitat destruction and illegal wildlife trade.
Chameleons are far more than color-changing reptiles. Their remarkable vision, lightning-fast tongues, and unique skin adaptations make them some of the most extraordinary creatures on Earth. As scientists continue to study them, these fascinating reptiles remind us that nature is full of surprises.
