The Animal That Can See With Its Skin: The Amazing Brittle Star

 

Hidden beneath rocks and coral reefs lives a marine animal with an ability that seems almost impossible. The brittle star has no eyes like humans or fish, yet some species can sense light and detect movement using specialized cells spread across their bodies. This unique adaptation helps them navigate the ocean floor and avoid danger.

Brittle stars belong to the same group of animals as sea stars and sea urchins. With more than 2,000 known species, they are found in oceans around the world, from shallow coral reefs to deep-sea habitats thousands of meters below the surface. Their long, flexible arms allow them to move much faster than most sea stars.

Instead of using eyes to see, certain brittle star species have tiny light-sensitive structures embedded in their calcite skeleton. These microscopic structures act like simple lenses, allowing the animals to detect changes in light and shadow. While they cannot form detailed images, they can recognize the direction of light and quickly react when predators approach.

Their flexible arms are another remarkable adaptation. If a predator grabs one of their arms, the brittle star can intentionally detach it in a process called autotomy. The detached arm continues to move for several minutes, distracting the predator while the animal escapes. Over time, the lost arm grows back through regeneration.

Brittle stars are mostly nocturnal, spending the day hidden beneath rocks or inside reef crevices. At night, they emerge to feed on tiny marine organisms, algae, and organic particles drifting through the water. Some species even use their arms like nets to capture floating food carried by ocean currents.

Although they may appear delicate, brittle stars have survived in Earth’s oceans for more than 480 million years, making them one of the oldest groups of marine animals still living today. Their success is a result of their adaptability, regenerative abilities, and efficient methods of finding food and avoiding predators.

The brittle star demonstrates that nature often solves problems in unexpected ways. By sensing light through its body and regenerating lost limbs, this remarkable marine animal has thrived in the world’s oceans for hundreds of millions of years.
