The Animal That Can Shoot Blood From Its Eyes: The Amazing Horned Lizard

The horned lizard has one of the most unusual defense mechanisms in the animal kingdom. When threatened by predators, some species can squirt streams of blood from the corners of their eyes, startling attackers and giving the lizard a chance to escape.

Found in the deserts and grasslands of North and Central America, horned lizards are easily recognized by their flat bodies, short tails, and crown of sharp horns around their heads. Their sandy colors help them blend perfectly into their surroundings, making them difficult for predators to spot.

The blood-squirting defense works by increasing blood pressure in tiny vessels around the eyes until they burst. The blood can travel up to 1.5 meters (5 feet) and is especially effective against predators such as coyotes and wild dogs, which find the blood foul-tasting.

Camouflage is the horned lizard’s first line of defense. If hiding fails, it inflates its body to appear larger and harder to swallow. Only as a last resort does it use its remarkable blood-squirting ability.

Horned lizards have a specialized diet, with many species feeding primarily on ants. A single adult can consume thousands of ants in one day, using its sticky tongue to catch them quickly and efficiently.

Despite their tough appearance, horned lizards face growing threats from habitat destruction, pesticide use, and declining ant populations. Several species have experienced population declines in parts of their natural range, making habitat conservation increasingly important.

The horned lizard is a remarkable example of nature’s creativity. Its ability to shoot blood from its eyes, combined with excellent camouflage and specialized hunting skills, makes it one of the most extraordinary reptiles in the world.
