The Animal That Can Survive for Decades Without Food: The Amazing Olm


 The olm is one of the world’s most mysterious amphibians, spending its entire life in the dark caves of Central and Southeastern Europe. Living in complete darkness has given this pale, eel-like creature a collection of extraordinary adaptations, including the astonishing ability to survive without food for up to 10 years under certain conditions.

Also known as the “human fish” because of its pale, pinkish skin, the olm has evolved to thrive in underground rivers and flooded caves where food is extremely scarce. Since sunlight never reaches these habitats, the animal has no need for body pigmentation, giving it its ghostly appearance.

Unlike most amphibians, the olm spends its entire life underwater and never undergoes a complete transformation into a land-dwelling adult. It keeps its feathery external gills throughout its life, allowing it to absorb oxygen directly from the water.

The olm’s eyes are covered by layers of skin, making them almost completely nonfunctional. Instead of relying on vision, it uses an exceptionally sharp sense of smell, hearing, and touch to detect prey in total darkness. Scientists have also found that it can sense tiny electrical fields and subtle water movements produced by nearby animals.

One of the olm’s greatest survival secrets is its incredibly slow metabolism. Because food is so limited in caves, the animal uses energy at an extremely low rate. This allows it to survive for years without eating while remaining healthy and active whenever food finally becomes available.

Olms feed on small crustaceans, insects, worms, and snails that drift through underground streams. They hunt patiently, conserving energy rather than chasing prey over long distances.

These unusual amphibians are also exceptionally long-lived. While most salamanders live only a few years, scientists estimate that olms can live more than 70 years, making them among the longest-living amphibians on Earth.

Although hidden from most of the world, olms face threats from groundwater pollution, habitat destruction, and climate change. Because they depend on clean underground water systems, protecting cave ecosystems is essential for their survival.

The olm is a remarkable example of evolution’s ability to adapt life to even the most extreme environments. Its slow metabolism, extraordinary lifespan, and ability to survive for years without food make it one of the most fascinating amphibians ever discovered.
