The Animal That Creates Electricity: The Amazing Electric Eel
The electric eel is one of the most extraordinary animals in freshwater ecosystems. Despite its name, it is not a true eel but a type of knifefish capable of producing powerful electric shocks. This remarkable ability allows it to hunt prey, defend itself from predators, and navigate through dark, murky waters where visibility is poor.
Electric eels inhabit rivers, floodplains, and swamps throughout the Amazon and Orinoco River basins in South America. These waters often contain very little oxygen, so the fish regularly swims to the surface to breathe air, obtaining most of its oxygen directly from the atmosphere.
The electric eel generates electricity using three specialized organs that make up about 80% of its body. These organs contain thousands of cells called electrocytes, which function like tiny batteries. When activated simultaneously, they produce a powerful electric discharge.
A large electric eel can generate shocks of up to 860 volts, making it the strongest known electric-producing fish. The shock is powerful enough to stun fish, deter predators, and even knock small mammals off balance if they enter the water.

Low-voltage pulses help it sense objects and navigate through muddy water, while high-voltage discharges are reserved for hunting and self-defense. This natural form of sonar allows the fish to detect prey even when it cannot see.
