Imagine slamming your head into a tree 20 times every second. For humans, that would almost certainly cause a serious brain injury. But for woodpeckers, it’s just another day in the forest.
These remarkable birds can peck at tree trunks up to 12,000 times a day without suffering concussions or permanent brain damage.

The secret lies in their unique anatomy. A woodpecker’s skull contains spongy bone that helps absorb powerful impacts. Their beaks are also specially designed to distribute the force of each strike instead of sending it directly to the brain.
